History
Spirit of Voice began in 2004 as a 1 day event in Galway City featuring choirs, sean nos singers, poets, rappers and opera soloists. Vocal genres on display were Galways Nuig & Gospel choir: Peter Byrne; Man & the Machine presenting Melody choral and beatbox rhythms.
In 2005 The Spirit of Voice developed its intercultural theme mixing vocal genres and international styles together. The 3 day event was a success highlighting cultural diversity plus providing a platform for showcasing new vocal talent. A dvd was produced to support Cystic Fibrosis Galway fund featuring many headline acts including..Julie Feeney; People of Note choir; Aine Ni Dhroighneainn; Orlaith Ni Mheachair.
2006: Spirit of Voice grew into a 5 day event, supporting the "City of Equals" presenting 55 live acts in 11 venues, with vocal workshops headlined by Sheila Chandra, Princeton Katzenjammers; Donnacha Toomey; Michel Brandt; Shaz Oye;
Nicola Williams receiving national media attention from John Kelly (RTE lyric) and Derek Mooney (RTE 1) who presented interviews with artists involved.
In 2007Spirit of Voice presented a selection of international and local acts representing their cultural voice. Featuring 20 artists and headlined by Rónán Ó Snodaigh; Mfa Kera; Gearoid Maclochlainn; Eric Ekhart; Linda Coogan. The festival also hosted singing workshops and school storytelling projects, providing a major Irish festival for solo singers and spoken word artists
Objectives
Spirit of Voice focuses on world voice styles and international singers and spoken word artists working together in the same arena.To stage events that unites language and cultural songs, describing audibly the traditional vocal core
that is derivative within music.Please applaud the human voice!
2008 Festival
Vocal Artists who wish to participate in the 08 event, please contact us. We are open to new acts from all over the world such as Comedians, Choirs, Singer/Songwriters and other voice style acts. Deadline is July 31st 2008.
